NFT-to-NFT Swaps Are Taxable Events
Think swapping NFTs avoids taxes? Think again. The IRS treats NFT-to-NFT trades as taxable events.
Why Swaps Are Taxable
In the IRS’s view:
- You’re selling your NFT for its fair market value
- You’re immediately buying the new NFT with that value
Both are taxable events.
Example
You swap your Azuki (bought for 5 ETH, now worth 8 ETH) for a Doodle (worth 8 ETH).
What you owe taxes on:
- Sale of Azuki: 8 ETH - 5 ETH = 3 ETH gain
- Taxable gain: 3 ETH worth at time of swap
Your new cost basis in Doodle: 8 ETH (the fair market value at swap time)
Common Mistakes
❌ “I didn’t sell for cash, so no taxes” ✅ Trades are taxable regardless of cash
❌ “I’ll report it when I sell the new NFT” ✅ You must report the swap in the year it happened
❌ “The values weren’t exactly equal” ✅ Use the fair market value of what you gave up
Platform Swaps
Using platforms like NFTTrader or Sudoswap? Every swap is a taxable event. The platform may not provide tax reporting, so track these manually.
Record Keeping
For each swap, document:
- Both NFTs involved
- Fair market values at time of swap
- Transaction hash
- Date and time
