When Do You Pay Taxes on NFT Airdrops?
NFT airdrops create a taxable event the moment you receive them, not when you sell.
The Two Tax Events
1. Receiving the Airdrop (Ordinary Income)
- Taxed at fair market value when received
- Treated as ordinary income
- Tax rate: 10-37% depending on your bracket
2. Selling the Airdrop (Capital Gains)
- Taxed on the difference between FMV at receipt and sale price
- Can be short-term or long-term depending on holding period
Example
Day 1: Receive airdropped NFT worth 0.5 ETH ($1,000)
- Ordinary income: $1,000
- Your cost basis: $1,000
Day 90: Sell for 1 ETH ($2,000)
- Short-term capital gain: $2,000 - $1,000 = $1,000
Total taxes owed: On $2,000 total ($1,000 ordinary income + $1,000 short-term gain)
Pro Tip
If you receive a worthless or low-value airdrop, it may not be worth claiming if gas fees exceed the value. You’ll owe taxes on the FMV even if you spend more in gas to claim it!
